Biography
Shemic St Hillaire is a Trinidad and Tobago–born dance artist, actor, and choreographer. He began formal dance training at the age of fifteen and holds a Certificate in Dance and Education from the University of the West Indies. Currently he is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance and Choreography at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica.
Alongside primarily being a member of IBIS Performers and Astor Johnson Repertory Dance Theatre in Trinidad, his professional and training experiences span the Caribbean and the United States, including a professional contract performing in Jamaica’s hotel entertainment industry. On scholarship, he participated in summer intensive study at the Earl Mosely Institute of the Arts in New York and Garth Fagan Dance 2025 Summer Movement Institute. As a cultural ambassador, Shemic has also represented Trinidad and Tobago at the UNESCO 2025 Transcultura Programme in Havana, Cuba.
Informed by a multidisciplinary athletic background, Shemic approaches work with a keen sense of discipline and intentionality. He aspires to continue developing a rigorous and socially engaged choreographic practice that situates Caribbean movement traditions within contemporary performance contexts. Inclusive of performing internationally, his long term hope is to contribute to the expansion access to dance education across the Caribbean, and using movement as a tool for cultural continuity, critical inquiry, and community empowerment.
