Biography
Maria Diaz is a Trinidadian artist whose passion for art began during her time at Bishops Anstey High School East. She graduated with honors from the University of the West Indies in 2017 with a BA in Visual Arts. As a recipient of the Canada-Caricom Leadership Scholarship, she spent a year at the University of Calgary, Canada, further developing her artistic voice.
Maria debuted at Horizons Art Gallery in 2018 and has exhibited there annually since. Her sculptures have been featured in CARIFESTA XIV and are part of esteemed collections including the Central Bank Museum of Trinidad and Tobago , the Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Tobago House of Assembly. In 2022, she co-created the largest monument in East Port of Spain with artist Sherlann Peters, commissioned by the Emancipation Support Committee of Trinidad and Tobago.
Specializing in sculpture, Maria works primarily with clay, drawn to the medium’s tactile and cathartic nature. Her art centers on the human form valued for its expressive range between realism and abstraction. Through surrealist compositions and striking juxtapositions, she explores themes of gender, mortality, and the human psyche. Her work serves as a reflection of her environment, inviting viewers to connect with shared experiences and reimagine familiar Caribbean narratives.
