Biography
‘Tian Richards is a self-taught representational artist born and raised in Carenage, Trinidad and Tobago. Richards, 27, credits the scenery of his childhood as the spark of inspiration that has influenced (and continues to) his work. Inspiration, having met childlike curiosity and innate talent, was honed into the craftsmanship you see today by teachers (such as Harold Telesford and Sabrina Charran) throughout his school years. Richards’ start to his professional art career began with commissions from friends and family in 2016. This evolved into mural-esque work at his church and launched into his first art gallery exhibition in 2021 at the 4 edition group show “New Faces” at Horizons Art Gallery. From there, he exhibited at galleries across the country, featured at and facilitated creative events, and stepped outside of the traditional work to create garments, backdrops, and set designs for theatrical and musical productions. Currently, Tian is working on a new body of work set to be his first solo exhibition. The exhibition is set to be a showcase of the uninterrupted interest in different subject matter narrated by the voice of bold colour and scale. A visual love letter to the people, places, and spaces that have shaped his creative practice.
