Biography
Natalia's love affair with singing began early, and her first taste of opera came as a teenager in the Lorna Myers Chorale. Voice training began with June Nathaniel at age 14 and a few months later she placed 3rd in the Operatic category at TT Music Festival. Since then she honed her stagecraft with Love Movement Choir, Marionettes Chorale & Diamond Chorale. At 2004 TT Music Festival, she copped three Championship trophies for Best Operatic Aria, Operatic Duet and Most Outstanding Performer, and was awarded a scholarship by Prime Minister's Sport & Culture Fund.
She gained rave reviews for "Queen of the Night" in sold out performances of Mozart's "Magic Flute"; Simon Lee (Guardian) called her "astonishing, mesmerizing and ultimately humbling, suggesting that at any second the singer may soar off into the stratosphere". Natalia gained a reputation for electric stage presence and vivacious portrayals of roles such as Rita (Rita) with Martina Arroyo’s Prelude to Performance Program NYC, and Eurilla (Il Pastor Fido) Manhattan School of Music where Opera Magazine noted; “The most advanced were the sopranos;... live wire presence Natalia Dopwell (Eurilla) could wield her diamantine high soprano as Serse’s Atalanta or Alcina’s Morgana.” Performed roles include Olympia (Tales of Hoffmann), Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte), Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus), Adina (Elixir of Love), Madame Herz (Impresario), Widow Glavari (Merry Widow), Micaela (Carmen), Fire, Princess & Nightingale (L'Enfant et les Sortileges).
Performance highlights include originating the role 'Female Jab Molassie' at Trinidadian composer Dominique Legendre's 2014 JAB MOLASSIE World Premiere (Calabash Foundation); Soprano soloist with National Philharmonic Orchestra T&T to debut ‘Remembrance’ Dr Roger J. Henry's newly composed seven movement symphonic work; Soprano soloist for Carmina Burana with UWI Arts Chorale, & Opening Ceremony of 2019 CARIFESTA.
Natalia has presented recitals in London, Poland, New York, Barbados, Grenada, Belize, & many times on home soil, She won 2nd place at 2012 Concurso y Festival de Canto Lirico, Peru. Her vocals comprise the soundtrack for “Fortune for All” (Yao Ramesar) winner of T&T Film Festival 2023 best feature & multiple International Awards including Best Feature Film Romania's Eastern EU Film Festival, & Paradise Film Festival, Budapest.
Natalia maintains a diverse vocal studio, with students spanning the gamut of Kaiso, Pop, Musical Theatre and Opera. As a voice teacher she focuses on relaxed and efficient vocal technique to find the unique beauty of each voice.
